Blue Jays' Roberto Osuna impresses Russell Martin in second career save
He's just 20 years old. He only has two saves in his big league career. But Toronto Blue Jays closer Roberto Osuna is impressing his team's leader.
After notching his second career save (a four-out save to boot), catcher Russell Martin spoke highly of his young closer, noting his perfect execution of his pitches to get that last out.
“He called me out to the mound and was like, ‘Hey, how do you want to attack him?’ ” Russell Martin told the National Post. “I’m like, ‘Fastball up at the hands and we’ll go from there.’ Once he got that first pitch out of the way, it was kind of smooth sailing.”
“Moreland’s a good hitter,” Martin continued. “I feel like he’s a good low-ball hitter. [His bat] stays in the zone for a long time up there. And we had beaten him up in the zone. I knew that he was going to be pumped up with adrenaline, and Osuna threw a perfect pitch, up at the hands, up and in. Got ahead of him, probably got him worried about the velocity a little bit.
“Then he executed a perfect changeup down and away. And then, at that point, I felt like we had him in-between. We just threw another fastball up and he executed that pitch also.”
There was no doubt Osuna has the stuff to be a closer at this level, now it seems he has the right mindset to go along with it.
