Boras: Never say never with Bogaerts extension with Red Sox

Agent Scott Boras has made a living off of being creative with his clients.

The overwhelming majority of the players he represents hit free agency, with the most notable exception being Jered Weaver signing a "hometown discount" extension with the Los Angeles Angels in 2011.

Boston Red Sox shortstop Xander Bogaerts could join that short list.

In speaking with WEEI Tuesday, Boras said that he wouldn't rule out a contract extension with Boston.

“Look, I always tell every team and every player, we’re an open door,” the agent said. “Anything they want to look at and offer, and then the player just has to make his judgments, so we evaluate that."

Bogaerts is enjoying a breakout season with the Red Sox. His .326 batting average is the second-highest in MLB, all while playing excellent defense in one of the game's most demanding position.

This breakout season comes as no surprise to Boras.

“From an evaluation standpoint, two years, three years ago, four years ago, when we first saw Xander play when he was just an entry-level player, we felt he was going to be a superstar,” Boras said. “He had the ability. Then the question was getting the durability, the strength, and then getting the performance acumen that you can only learn at the major league level."

Boras also went on to note that the Red Sox coaching staff deserves a ton of credit for Bogaerts' quick progression.

Since the young shortstop is only in his second season, he won't become arbitration-eligible until 2017 with 2020 being his earliest free agent season.
