Bryce Harper reveals the only way he'll play in the World Baseball Classic
Bryce Harper is arguably the best player in baseball right now, and has been since the start of last season. He's a player the U.S. team needs in the World Baseball Classic next year, but he's reluctant to commit to playing. As of now, only one thing will get him completely on board: star power.
"I think when you really look at it, if the guys play that you really want to play with, then definitely I'll play. But if we're not going to have the opportunity to win, then I don't want to play," Harper told CSN Mid-Atlantic. "If we do that, then I'm definitely in. If not, I probably won't do it."
Translation: If the U.S. team is stacked with the likes of Mike Trout, Anthony Rizzo and Kris Bryant, he'll play. If not, don't expect to see Harper on the squad.
"I really just think if we have the support of all the players in the big leagues on the American side, then I'll definitely play," he said. "I'd love to. Hopefully we get some guys like Thor in New York and guys like that."
Harper named Rizzo, Bryant, Noah Syndgeraard and Nolan Arenado specifically, among others. A lineup with those names and a rotation featuring Syndergaard would be daunting, and that's exactly what Harper wants to see.
