Cardinals' Randal Grichuk should have been out twice on his first homer of the year
Randal Grichuk finally got of the schneid on Thursday by belting his first home run of the season, giving the St. Louis Cardinals a 5-0 lead over the Milwaukee Brewers. Strangely enough, he should have been out twice on the play.
Grichuk hit one of the strangest home runs of the young season, and it was all thanks to a combination of a near-catch by Keon Broxton and some poor base running on the part of the Cardinals.
Broxton came so close to robbing Grichuk of a two-run homer, but the ball hit his glove and cleared the wall. Whoops.
As Broxton was attempting to rob the Cardinals of a home run, Brandon Moss was preparing to tag up at first in the event that it was caught. A smart play, of course, but Grichuk actually passed him when rounding first, which the umpires didn't notice.
Had they seen Grichuk make the mistake, he would have been called out and credited with an RBI single instead of a two-run home run. Talk about a lucky break.
The Cardinals did go on to win 7-0 thanks to a one-hit shutout from Jaime Garcia.
