Cleveland Indians reinstate Mike Aviles before second-half opener
The Indians have reinstated infielder Mike Aviles from the Family Medical Emergency list after optioning infielder Jose Ramirez to Triple-A Columbus on Sunday.
The move was announced on Thursday, one day before the team opens the second half of the season against the Reds in Cincinnati.
From MLB.com:
"Aviles left the team July 11 tend to his 4-year-old daughter, Adriana, as she undergoes chemotherapy for leukemia. He had previously been away from the team for 10 days from May 8-17 for the same reason."
Ramirez, who has struggled at the big league level, will see more playing time in the outfield at Triple-A Columbus. He has hit .349/.415/.477 in 125 plate appearances with the Clippers this season.
Aviles, who has hit .250 with four home runs and nine RBI this year, will resume his role as Cleveland's utility man.
