Could Aaron Hill be next Diamondbacks player to be traded?
In light of the Bronson Arroyo trade, The Arizona Republic muses on whether infielder Aaron Hill might be the next veteran with an expensive contract to be dealt. Since last season, Miguel Montero, Martin Prado and Trevor Cahill have been traded away in addition to Arroyo. This has saved the D-backs $80 million in contracts, according to the Republic.
Chief baseball office Tony La Russa said that the Arroyo trade gave the D-backs “payroll flexibility.” The Republic notes that Hill is owed the rest of his $12 million salary this year and another $12 million next season. Hill hit .244 last year and is only hitting .230 this season. Meanwhile, the team has younger skilled players at his positions -- Chris Owings at second base, Nick Ahmed at shortstop and Jake Lamb at third.
The 33-year-old understands that he might be next to go. He said:
"They were vocal about what they said they were going to do, about going young…I can't lie to myself -- I'm not one of the young guys anymore. It's part of the game. Whatever happens happens.”
