Cubs agree to $1.42 million deal with Rex Brothers
CHICAGO (AP) The Cubs have agreed to a $1.42 million, one-year contract with recently acquired reliever Rex Brothers.
The left-hander was obtained from Colorado last week for minor league pitcher Wander Cabrera.
Brothers, 27, began last season at Triple-A Albuquerque, where he went 5-2 with a 4.46 ERA. In two stints with the Rockies, the former first-round draft pick was 1-0 with a 1.74 ERA. In parts of five seasons, he was 16-11 with a 3.42 ERA in 286 appearances with Colorado.
Chicago did not offer contracts Wednesday to left-handers Ryan Cook and Jack Leathersich, who became free agents. Leathersich was not eligible for arbitration.
The Cubs have seven arbitration-eligible players remaining: pitchers Jake Arrieta, Travis Wood, Pedro Strop, Hector Rondon, Justin Grimm and Clayton Richard; and outfielder Chris Coghlan.
