Cubs and Cardinals fans react to Dexter Fowler switching sides in the rivalry
Dexter Fowler walked away from a potentially more lucrative contract with the Baltimore Orioles last offseason to return to the Chicago Cubs on a 1-year, $8 million deal. This time the 30-year-old is cashing in his golden ticket after a career year manning center field for the curse-breaking World Series champions.
But Fowler is not moving to the American League or even leaving the NL Central: He's joining the enemy St. Louis Cardinals on a 5-year, $82.5 million deal with a full no-trade clause.
A lot of Cubs fans are supportive and understand that this is the business of baseball, while others are anguished that Fowler, a popular Cub who smashed a leadoff home run in the first inning of World Series Game 7, will now don a Cardinals uniform. Here's the range of emotions Cubs, Cardinals and other baseball fans are experiencing in the wake of the move:
Finally, from the Cubs fan perspective, this one sums it up best:
Watching Dexter Fowler's Cardinals intro presser...I'm not saying I cried, but I did have a lip quiver or two.
