Cubs slugger Kyle Schwarber makes World Series history in Game 2
Kyle Schwarber tore ligaments in his left knee in an outfield collision on the third day of the season and hadn't played since, so when the Chicago Cubs announced before the World Series that he would be activated and immediately inserted into the lineup the natural reaction was, "What? How?"
It was almost impossible to think Schwarber could go all season without playing, get a couple games in the Arizona Fall League in and then be ready to play in the biggest game of his life. A week ago, not even he thought that was possible.
"I'd probably say about six days ago," Schwarber said Tuesday when asked when the idea of playing in the World Series became real. "I took regular visits to the doctor every month or two. And he kept telling me, 'It's going to be Spring Training' [when he could return]. Then this past doctor's visit I had right before we went to L.A. for the [NLCS] he looked at my knee, he's like, 'Man, it's great. You're strong. I'm not going to hold you back from doing anything.'"
Well, not only is Schwarber playing, but on Wednesday he even made a cool bit of World Series history in a 5-1 win for the Cubs.
After doubling in Game 1, Schwarber added RBI singles in the third and fifth innings of Game 2 to earn this cool honor:
Good for Schwarber, a central piece to this Cubs team before getting hurt, who can now feel like he played a role if the Cubs indeed go on to win the World Series.
