David Ortiz is retired…or is he? The Chris Sale trade has the Large Father reconsidering his decision.
David Ortiz retired after the 2016 season in grand fashion. He was done, finished, with no intentions of returning for the 2017 season. Though Ortiz put up the best season ever by a player over the age of 40 — leading the AL with 48 doubles, 127 RBIs, a .620 slugging percentage, and a 1.021 OPS — his body had begun breaking down and it was time to call it a career.
Now, Papi may be reconsidering things after the Red Sox pulled off a blockbuster trade for ace Chris Sale.
This is probably some good ol’ fashioned trolling by Big Papi, but because Ortiz retired after one of the best seasons of his career, the cries for him to return for just one more season were loud. The Sox came up short in the ALDS, losing to the Cleveland Indians and stopping Ortiz’s Cinderella season short of the World Series.
The Red Sox are going to open up the 2017 season as the American League favorites. That has to be attractive to Ortiz, no matter how sore his feet and legs are. It also doesn’t hurt that the Red Sox were able to acquire Sale without trading Mookie Betts, Jackie Bradley, Andrew Benintendi, Xander Bogaerts, or Eduardo Rodriguez. This team is loaded, and you can’t blame Ortiz for giving his retirement the potential Brett Farve treatment.
It’s going to be very, very hard for Ortiz to stay retired with the way the Red Sox are put together for next season. If he really wants to, his spot will be opened up at DH, regardless of the luxury tax implications. The rest of the league might even be willing to give him a second round of send-off gifts.
That being said, until the Large Father starts posting inspirational videos of himself working out in the batting cage, he’s probably just trolling us on Instagram.
