Deja vu? Cubs looking to pull off a Red Sox-style comeback

Published Oct. 21, 2015 9:48 a.m. ET

Remember when the 2004 Boston Red Sox shocked the world by becoming the first major-league team to overcome a 3-0 playoff series deficit and then went on to win the World Series?

The Chicago Cubs sure do.

The Cubs now find themselves in a 3-0 hole against the New York Mets. They need to win their next two games at home to even send the series back to the Big Apple. Cubs first baseman Anthony Rizzo and team president Theo Epstein, who happened to be the general manager of the 2004 Red Sox, have not given up hope.

The Red Sox are the only team in baseball history to even force a Game 7 after being down 3-0, let alone come back to win the series. For what it’s worth, that team also lost its first two games at home.

When Boston won the championship in 2004, it broke an 86-year curse. If the Cubs pulled off the same comeback and went on to break their 106-year curse, it would be one of the greatest stories in sports history.
