The Dodgers have designated outfielder Carl Crawford for assignment, the team announced Sunday morning.

The outfielder is said to have about $35 million remaining on his contract, which runs through 2017. The Dodgers are responsible for paying the remainder of the deal.

Acquired from the Boston Red Sox in a nine-player trade in 2012, the 34-year-old Crawford has been struggling of late. The veteran started the year on the disabled list with a back injury, and has hit .185/.230/.235 this season in 30 games.

Catcher/infielder Austin Barnes has been recalled from Triple-A Oklahoma City to take Crawford's place.
