Diamondbacks fire manager Chip Hale, GM after 93-loss season
The Arizona Diamondbacks, who after a splashy offseason went 69-93 and finished in fourth place in the National League West, fired manager Chip Hale and general manager Dave Stewart Monday.
Both were in their second year with the team.
The Diamondbacks went 148-176 under Hale, but it was surely the 93-loss 2016 season that did him and Stewart in.
Arizona spent $206.5 million on free agent pitcher Zack Greinke before the 2016 season — his $34.4 million per year salary the largest in baseball — and traded for Atlanta Braves starter Shelby Miller, going all-in on the present. Both pitchers woefully underperformed this season — Miller was among the worst pitchers in baseball.
"Ultimately, the results have not been what we had hoped and while that responsibility is shared by all of us, we have decided that a change is necessary," team owner Ken Kendrick said in a statement released Monday.
Tony LaRussa, will remain with the team. It's unknown if he'll remain the team's chief baseball executive.
