Diamondbacks Jean Segura: Sneaky 2B Draft Pick in 2017

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

Diamondbacks second baseman Jean Segura quietly had a great season. When doing mock drafts, is he someone you should target as a late-round pick in 2017?

It’s been talked about a lot already, but it doesn’t hurt to bring up again. Position scarcity, especially in the middle infield positions, is dead. There is no need to draft a top-five player early just to fill the position. There is value to be had up and down the draft board. One player that is worth targeting is Arizona Diamondbacks second baseman Jean Segura.

Segura spent three and a half seasons with the Milwaukee Brewers and had decent fantasy success in that time. His best season was in 2013 when he was voted into the All-Star game. He hit 12 home runs, 49 RBI and a .294 batting average. Segura also stole 44 bases in 57 attempts.

However, because he didn’t produce a lot of power, he fell into the late rounds of fantasy drafts. His ADP was 218.8, 22nd round. For someone with speed and contact, that’s not that bad, but there were other players worth drafting over him.

In the offseason, Segura was traded to the Diamondbacks. The team moved him over to second base to fill the void Aaron Hill left in the trade.

At the end of this season, this was Segura’s best to date. In 153 games, he hit 20 home runs and 64 RBI. He posted his first 200-hit season and scored 102 runs, stole 33 bases and hit .319.

The Diamondbacks as a team did not performance like many had hoped, but the top stars did. This was Segura’s breakout season. He finished as the No. 3 second baseman and No. 2 shortstop on the Player Rater. I don’t think he’ll finish that high again, but a top-10 season is more than likely.

Entering the 2017 season, Segura will retain shortstop eligibility as he played in the required 20 games in ESPN leagues. But, he will likely be drafted as a second baseman. He is currently ranked outside the top-10 second basemen.

The Diamondbacks need a repeat performance from Segura next season. Paul Goldschmidt is the anchor to that offense, but there are other players stepping up to the plate (no pun intended). I think you should be able to draft Segura between round 15 and 18 and still get a 16 HR/60 RBI/40 SB/.310 line.
