Yasmani Grandal’s breakout season is a redemption of sorts for the Dodgers’ switch-hitting catcher. After being suspended 50 games for PEDs and then suffering a season-ending knee injury, 2013 was certainly a bad year for Grandal.
Per MLB.com, Grandal now has a positive outlook on that forgettable year:
"You've got to hit rock bottom in order to climb back up. I felt like that was rock bottom there.”
Halfway through this season Grandal has hit 12 home runs and driven in 31 runs while being a solid presence behind the plate for the Dodgers.
Grandal may be playing with a chip on his shoulder. He recalls a lot of negativity going around following his knee injury. The catcher admits he took it personally saying, “When they tell me I'm not going to do something, I like to prove them wrong.”
So far, he’s been proving the Dodgers right in their trade which sent established star Matt Kemp to San Diego in exchange for him.
