Encarnacion does 'Edwing' because Blue Jays teammates liked it
Toronto Blue Jays slugger Edwin Encarnacion has hit 34 home runs this season - which means he has 'Edwinged' around the bases 34 times.
For those who haven't seen, the Edwing happens when Encarnacion rounds first base on a homer, raising his arm parallel to the ground until he hits third base. Here's an example:
It's something he's done every home run since 2012, but according to Encarncion, it's not a ritual - he just does it for fun.
“If I keep hitting home runs I’m going to keep doing it,” said Encarnacion via the Chronicle Herald. “No superstitions, I just like to do it.”
It was on a grand slam in April of 2012 that sparked the whole thing, with Encarnacion saying he was imitating an airplane:
“When I hit the grand slam I got excited and rounded the bases from the side, turning like an airplane,” said Encarnacion. “My teammates liked it and said I should keep doing it so I’ve kept doing it.”
Whatever the reason, Jays fans have gotten used to the Edwing, as Encarnacion has hit at least 34 homers every season since 2012.
