Every Marlins player will wear No. 16 in honor of Jose Fernandez
On Monday, the Marlins will take the field for the first time since the death of 24-year-old ace Jose Fernandez, who died in a boating accident in Miami early Sunday morning. When they do so, every player on the team will be wearing Fernandez's No. 16 on their jersey.
It's a touching move to honor the immensely talented young man that was tragically taken from baseball (and this life) way too soon over the weekend.
Fernandez's No. 16 has also been painted on the pitcher's mound at Marlins park:
Following the grim news on Sunday, many players and teams around the league paid tribute to Fernandez. Several clubs hung his jersey in their dugout, others honored him with a moment of silence and video board remembrance, and many took to social media to share their sorrow over the loss.
The Marlins were scheduled to play a game against the Braves on Sunday, but that contest was cancelled in wake of the news.
