GOODYEAR, Ariz. (AP) -- Yan Gomes hit his fifth spring homer and drove in three runs, leading a Cleveland Indians split-squad to a 4-1 victory over the Seattle Mariners on Tuesday night.
Gomes hit a sacrifice fly in the first, and then connected for a two-run shot against Taijuan Walker in the third.
"Gomer's taking really good swings," Indians manager Terry Francona said. "We are starting to see what he can do when he's healthy."
Josh Tomlin, who is competing for the fifth spot in Cleveland's rotation, struck out 10 in six scoreless innings. He allowed three hits and walked none.
Tomlin retired his first nine batters before Nori Aoki reached on an error on shortstop Yu-Cheng Chang.
"We've been saying all along Josh has been working on stuff," Francona said. "He took a while to get started but that's him. He doesn't beat himself. He doesn't walk anybody. They can't run on him."
Walker pitched five innings, allowing three runs and six hits. He struck out seven and walked two.
"I hung a slider to Gomes," Walker said. "I had a few guys 1-2 or 0-2 and let them back in the count. I have to work on that. I feel good about the spring. I paced myself pretty well. I'm happy where I am right now."
Daniel Robertson had an RBI single in the ninth for Seattle.
STARTING TIME
Mariners: Walker is working on a slider as a power pitch to replace his cutter.
"It is something that I have to get a feel for," Walker said. "I threw a couple good ones but just left one up to Gomes. Mel (pitching coach Mel Stottlemyre) thinks the slider can be a good power pitch for me. I think it means the end of the cutter. The slider moves more."
Indians: The team will decide on Wednesday whether Tomlin will work out of the bullpen in favor of Cody Anderson or start.
"I'm hoping for the best 25 guys," Tomlin said. "We need to put personal preferences aside. You do whatever you can to help your team win games. The goal should be to try to win the World Series, not I'd rather start, I'd rather be in the bullpen. Just get the ball whenever you get the ball and try to compete and win."
TRAINER'S ROOM
Mariners: LHP Charlie Furbush will have injections on Wednesday to speed healing of his shoulder. He had a partial tear of his rotator cuff, but surgery was ruled out. He will start the season on the disabled list. ... Third base coach Manny Acta is out with the flu.
Indians: OF Michael Brantley and Lonnie Chisenhall will start the season on the disabled list.
