Freeman's injury more serious than expected, return uncertain
The Atlanta Braves were hoping to have power-hitting first baseman Freddie Freeman back in the lineup by the end of July, but now they're wavering on pinpointing his return date.
"It's more serious than we expected," president of baseball operations John Hart told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. "I'm hoping he'll be back before the first of August but he may not be."
Freeman and the Braves were initially optimistic that he would return a few days after receiving a platelet-rich plasma and cortisone injections on his injured right wrist, but he has been out for a month now, last playing in a game on June 17.
"He's working hard to get back but it's a slow-healing injury and it still gives him pain when he swings," Hart said. "He dinged it, played four or five days with it, and we have him a few days off. We gave him an injection and thought he would be back in two or three days but it was no better. We did further tests and found it was more serious than we thought."
Prior to suffering his injury, Freeman hit .299/.367/.520 with 12 home runs and 41 RBI in 66 games for the Braves this season.
