Giancarlo Stanton volunteers for HR Derby after outslugging Yoenis Cespedes
Giancarlo Stanton volunteered to take part in this year's Home Run Derby after outslugging Yoenis Cespedes in a display of their remarkable power.
Stanton blasted a pair of homers in Tuesday's 5-2 win at the Mets, including a shot that landed in the second deck in left. Cespedes hit a homer that bounced off the facing of the second deck.
"I know that Stanton can hit further than me," Cespedes said afterward through a translator.
Stanton was feeling pretty powerful after hitting his fifth homer in his past 17 games, and volunteered to take part in the upcoming Home Run Derby. He participated previously in 2014.
"Unfortunately, I missed two Home Run Derbies that I was supposed to be in. I've got some catching up to do," he said. "Tell 'em to ask."
Cespedes, who won the contest in 2013 and 2014 and will start for the National League in the All-Star Game, said he'd rather not take part in the derby this time.
