Giants' Matt Cain sidelined again after more physical problems
San Francisco Giants right-hander Matt Cain had a cyst removed from his upper right arm and won't throw for the next 10 days, the team announced Thursday.
Cain, 31, was limited to just 13 games (11 starts) by injuries during the 2015 season and made only 15 starts during the 2014 season. Prior to that, however, he made at least 30 starts and pitched at least 200 innings in every season from 2007-2013.
He threw a perfect game in 2012, when he made his third All-Star team and helped lead the Giants to their second World Series title in three years (they added another in 2014).
The Giants added free-agent right-handers Johnny Cueto and Jeff Samardjiza this offseason to slot behind ace Madison Bumgarner in the rotation. Cain, Jake Peavy and Chris Heston are competing for the final two spots, though this news could hurt Cain's chances.
Cain's setback also should fuel more speculation about a possible reunion between the Giants and free-agent right-hander Tim Lincecum.
