Giants might have the best infield in baseball
Coming into the 2015 season, the Dodgers got a lot of attention with their revamped infield up the middle. However, not only do the Giants have a better infield than their division rivals, according to a couple of metrics, they have arguably the best infield in all of baseball.
According to Fangraphs, the Giants have a higher infield WAR than any other team in the majors by a full two runs. The Blue Jays are second, and the Dodgers rank sixth. The Giants infield’s WAR of nearly 13 has already surpassed preseason projections of a 12.4 WAR for the entire season.
The San Francisco infield includes Buster Posey being his usual productive self behind the plate, Brandon Belt a steady presence at first base, Joe Panik avoiding a sophomore slump at second, Brandon Crawford breaking out offensively at shortstop and Matt Duffy being a revelation at third (base and in the lineup).
Meanwhile, ESPN’s Mark Simon points out that the Giants infield ranks second in baseball in DRS (Defensive Runs Saved).
It’s also worth noting that the entire Giants infield is home-grown and relatively young. In terms of value and future promise, the Giants can easily make the case for having the best infield.
