Giants young catcher Susac getting more time behind plate over Posey

Buster Posey has emerged once again this week as the leading All-Star vote-getter among National League catchers, and will likely start the game on July 14. Interestingly, he won’t be the Giants’ regular catcher going forward, at least for the time being.

With the injuries to outfielders Hunter Pence and Nori Aoki, first baseman Brandon Belt has been playing some left field, while Buster Posey plays at first. This arrangement has become possible because of the emergence of 25-year-old catcher Andrew Susac. Per Andrew Baggarly of the San Jose Mercury News, Giants manager Bruce Bochy said:

“We need some help offensively and he provides that. It’s nice to have a guy behind Buster like Susac. He’s a tough out. He’s got power.”

Susac is hitting .455 with an OPS of 1.342 in 23 plate appearances over the past two weeks. He had his first three-RBI game on Saturday.

Though Susac will be behind the plate more frequently, Posey will be catching Madison Bumgarner’s starts, according to Baggarly.
