Greinke named recipient of Roy Campanella Award
Zack Greinke has been selected over fellow Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw for an award – and it's not the Cy Young … at least not yet.
Greinke was named this year's recipient of the Dodgers' 10th Roy Campanella Award on Thursday, ending Kershaw's two-year streak of receiving the award.
The Roy Campanella Award has been granted every year since 2006 to the Dodgers player who best exemplifies the spirit and leadership of the former Brooklyn Dodgers Hall of Fame catcher, and is voted on by Dodgers players and coaches.
Greinke is the only pitcher to receive the award other than Kershaw.
Among the past recipients of the award are Rafael Furcal (2006), Russell Martin (2007), James Loney (2008), Juan Pierre (2009), Jamey Carroll (2010), Matt Kemp (2011), A.J. Ellis (2012). Kershaw has won the award the past two seasons.
Greinke, who is a top contender alongside Kershaw for this year's Cy Young Award, currently leads MLB with a 1.68 ERA and 0.85 WHIP.
The 31-year-old right-hander will be presented the award before the Dodgers' final regular-season game on Sunday.
