Cleveland Indians claim reliever Guerra off waivers from Pittsburgh
The Indians have claimed reliever Deolis Guerra off waivers from Pittsburgh, the team announced Wednesday.
Guerra, a 26-year-old rookie, went 2-0 with a 6.48 ERA in 10 appearances for the Pirates this season. He has recorded 17 strikeouts and only three walks in 16 2/3 innings pitched.
The right-hander opened the season with Triple-A Indianapolis and posted a 1.23 ERA with four saves, 37 strikeouts and nine walks in 25 appearances before being called up to Pittsburgh on June 26.
Guerra was designated for assignment on July 31 following the Pirates' acquisition of right-hander Joakim Soria from Detroit. He was originally signed by the New York Mets as a non-drafted free agent in 2005.
To make room on the Indians 40-man roster, left-hander Michael Roth has been designated for assignment. Roth went 7-6 with a 4.15 ERA in 19 starts for Triple-A Columbus this season.
