Jorge Alfaro to Make First Major League Start Tuesday Against Pirates
Jorge Alfaro, a major piece to the Phillies future, is finally here, and he’ll get a chance to start Tuesday night
Jorge Alfaro and Roman Quinn arrived to Philadelphia after Reading was knocked out of the playoffs by the Trenton Thunder last week with fanfare.
Quinn earned two starts out of the gate, recording both his first major league hit and stolen base Monday. His two doubles helped spark the Phillies 6-2 win over Pittsburgh.
Catcher Jorge Alfaro entered the game as a pinch-hitter, and beat out a slow-rolling ball for an infield hit.
While an infield hit is not the first thing you would have expected a power-hitting catcher to have as his first major league hit, he had as many hits as the starter Cameron Rupp.
With Alec Asher on the mound Tuesday, Pete Mackanin announced Jorge Alfaro will start behind the plate for the first time as a Phillie.
Asher and Alfaro both came over in the Cole Hamels trade last summer, so they have some familiarity with each other. Alfaro will most likely build chemistry and work with the pitching staff during the week, and make more starts once everyone is on the same page.
Alfaro will be facing former Yankee Ivan Nova, who came over in a trade for two minor league players. Nova is 5-0 with a 2.53 ERA since coming over from the Yankees at the trade deadline.
Nova’s only start against the Phillies came in June of 2015, when he pitched 6.2 shutout innings in a 10-2 Yankees win.
First pitch will be at 7:05 tonight from Citizens Bank Park with Alec Asher on the mound.
