Jose Fernandez's final pitch is as perfect as it is painful
It’s heartbreaking to know that Jose Fernandez has thrown his final pitch. But that final pitch is a perfect example of what made the Marlins’ ace so special.
Protecting a 1-0 lead over the Nationals in the top of the eighth inning at Marlins Park on Tuesday night, Fernandez escaped a two-on, two-out jam by getting Daniel Murphy to ground out.
Pay special attention to Fernandez’s charisma and emotion, and take note of his family cheering him on and Marlins hitting coach Barry Bonds congratulating him.
Fernandez picked up his 16th win in that final start. Sadly, we’ll always wonder how great the 24-year-old would have been in his prime. Rest in peace, Jose.
