Justin Verlander unknowing victim of alleged violent carjacker
Detroit Tigers pitcher Justin Verlander was the victim of an alleged carjacker's month-long crime spree when his temporary tag was stolen from his truck — and he didn't even know it.
According to the Lakeland Ledger, Verlander reported the tag missing last week and told police he believed it blew off his truck while he was at a Lakeland, Florida, movie theater. The tag was later found on a stolen car being driven by Tyler Demalignon, a 24-year-old Lakeland man.
In addition to Verlander's tags, police recovered over $1,000 in stolen goods, including an iPhone, clothing, DVDs and GPS systems from the suspect.
Demalignon is being charged with six felonies, including several vehicle thefts and armed robbery. He also faces 21 misdemeanor charges.
Verlander caught wind of the Ledger's story Friday morning and tweeted out the link, along with the comment, "True story!!"
