Los Angeles Angels C.J. Cron To Have Thumb Surgery, Will Be Out 6 to 8 Weeks

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

Los Angeles Angels first baseman C.J. Cron had a breakout season in 2016 setting career highs in average, homers, & runs batted in. Cron’s numbers would have been better if not for breaking his hand in July putting him out for 5 weeks.

On Tuesday, the Los Angeles Angels announced that Cron was having discomfort in his thumb after coming back from the hand injury. Tuesday he had surgery to relieve the pain in his thumb. The procedure is called debridement and will require six to eight weeks of rehabilitation, but doctors say Cron will be ready for Spring Training.

Cron was hit by a pitch by the Orioles Michael Wright on July 8, 2016.  Wright threw a 95 mile per hour fastball on the left hand causing a fracture.  Despite missing five weeks Cron hit .278 with 16 homers and 69 runs batted in 116 games.

Cron seem to come into his own this season shaking off a poor start.  Cron only hit .203 with one homer and four RBI’s in April but bounced back over the next three months to raise his average to .278 by the All-Star break.

Cron has taken over the every day first base duties from Albert Pujols due to Pujols’ plantar fasciititis problems.  He started 97 games at first base making six errors in 761 chances with a .993 fielding percentage.  Next season the Angels are most likely going to play Cron every day providing he is totally healthy and Pujols will be the full-time designated hitter.

Cron is the second Angel to undergo off-season surgery as right fielder Kole Calhoun had surgery on his bilateral core muscle in early October.  Jefry Marte and Ji-Man Choi both saw some action at first base this season.  Marte will most likely be Cron’s back-up at first.

If Cron finally plays a full season in 2017 he could far surpass his 2016 numbers. We will have to wait and see how well Cron recovers from the surgery to determine the next step in Cron’s road to recovery.
