Los Angeles Angels Kole Calhoun to have surgery. Will be ready by Spring.
Los Angeles Angels right fielder Kole Calhoun is set to undergo surgery to repair a bilateral core muscled injury. The good news is recovery time for Calhoun is six to eight weeks. should be ready by Spring Training with no limitations.
With all the injuries the Los Angeles Angels had during the 2016 season, luckily that list didn’t include Kole Calhoun. Calhoun has been solid as a rock in right field both offensively and defensively since winning the position in the Spring of 2014.
The injury has been nagging Calhoun all season and he was undergoing treatment for it all season. According to Jeff Fletcher of the OC Register Calhoun will have surgery today in Philadelphia with Dr. William Myers performing the procedure. Calhoun’s injury that he played through this season, could have contributed to Calhoun’s slump in power numbers since it was in his core.
Most players don’t like to make excuses for poor play and Calhoun is no different as he never opted out of the line-up because of injury this season. However, according to Angels general manager Billy Eppler said that Calhoun’s condition was nagging, tight, and uncomfortable throughout the season. Eppler also said the surgery should alleviate the problem.
Calhoun played in all but five games this season, missing three of the games for the birth of his first child. Calhoun only missed three games last season all of which were scheduled off days to help keep him fresh.

Calhoun has only had one stint on the disabled list in his career which was early in the 2014 when he severely sprained his ankle and missed 32 games with the injury. Both Calhoun and center fielder Mike Trout have had relatively injury-free careers. Trout has never been on the disabled list missing only 16 games the past four seasons.
With all of the upheaval the plethora of injuries caused this season, it was a great comfort for Los Angeles manager Mike Scioscia to be able to know that he had two positions he never had to worry about two spots: right field and center field. The duo defensively have been stellar with Calhoun winning the Gold Glove in right last season and being in the running again this season. Trout was also a finalist last season for the Gold Glove and could very well be again this year.
Offensively, Calhoun’s numbers slipped a bit as hit 18 homers and drove in 75 runs, which were down from last year’s 26 home runs and 83 RBI’s. Calhoun did improve his batting average from 2015 as he hit .271 in 2016. Calhoun did have a 35 game power outage from the end of June until early August when he did not go deep. He was in danger of having a career-low in home runs before a late surge (five home runs in his last 25 games) helped bring him up to 18 for the season.
Here is hoping for a speedy recovery for the Red Baron, AKA Kole Calhoun. Looking forward to seeing you roaming right field again in 2017.
