Mets: Asdrubal Cabrera's knee feeling "great" ahead of World Baseball Classic
The Mets had a lot of injuries in 2016. While not all of them caused their respective players to miss significant time, they were still worrisome enough to come to mind as the offseason rolled on through.
One of these lingering and annoying injuries had to do Asdrubal Cabrera‘s knee. Back in Spring Training of last season Cabrera experienced a sore knee and was forced to leave the game. Although he’d end up missing a couple of weeks, the subsequent tests revealed no serious damage had been done.
Later in the year, Cabrera would suffer a more serious knee injury rounding third base. Again he’d recover, and again he’d come back to absolutely rake for the Mets offense.
These knee issues kept on bothering him at different intervals during the regular season though, so naturally we were worried about it now. Thankfully, Cabrera required no surgery to fix his knee. All he needed was a little rest, and relaxation apparently.
He spoke to the New York Daily News and shared his progress gearing up for the World Baseball Classic and the regular season.
“I did rest for two and half months and started working out in late December,” Cabrera told the Daily News. “I played winter ball to test the knee. I’m trying to get ready now for the season. My knee feels really good.”
The good news comes as we get closer and closer to the start of Spring Training, and joins the likes of Matt Harvey, Steven Matz, David Wright and others that have proclaimed to be feeling as healthy as possible going into the year.
With the World Baseball Classic also slated to take place this spring, Cabrera’s health is of the utmost importance. The 31-year-old will be suiting up for La Vinotinto as Venezuela hopes to make a serious dent in this year’s tournament.
Venezuela’s first game will be on March 10, 2017 in Jalisco, Mexico versus Puerto Rico.
