Mets RHP Noah Syndergaard returns for what could be last regular season start
This could be Syndergaard’s final regular season start for the Mets.
After an emotional game last night, Noah Syndergaard will make the start for the Mets against the Miami Marlins tonight.
Syndergaard returns to the mound after having his Saturday start skipped due to him having strep throat.
With five games remaining on the schedule, Syndergaard could start twice — tonight and Sunday in Philadelphia for game 162 — before the season ends. However, if the Mets can wrap up a Wild Card spot before Sunday’s game, that would change things up a bit.
In that event, the team will likely skip him in game 162 and save him for the Wednesday, October 5, Wild Card game instead. If the Mets’ postseason hopes hinge on Sunday’s season finale, you can also certainly bet Syndergaard will be taking the mound then.
Syndergaard and Bartolo Colon are the only remaining pieces of the rotation from the Opening Day roster. With Matt Harvey and Jacob deGrom done for the year, and Steven Matz having just followed suit, these two workhorses will be relied on heavily.
With hopes of reaching the NLDS, the Mets’ starting rotation is looking very different from what it was just 12 months ago. As fans, the best scenario would be to wrap up not only the Wild Card as quickly as possible, but also home field for said game.
If it comes down to the last day of the season, and the Mets have already clinched a Wild Card spot but don’t have home field advantage secured, I don’t think Syndergaard makes that final start.
The Mets would likely prefer to start Syndergaard on the road (in the event of a loss), rather than having to start Colon/Gsellman/Lugo at home.
It’s going to be an interesting few days. The mindset now has to be win at all costs, and with Thor on the mound tonight, it’s about as good a night to get it going again.
