Mets to honor '86 World Series team by wearing its uniform this year

Published Feb. 3, 2016 6:56 p.m. ET

Fresh off a World Series appearance, the New York Mets hope their most recent championship team can rub off some magic this season as they honor them throughout 2016.

In addition to honoring its 1986 championship team with a pair of giveaways and a pre-game ceremony during the Mets' series against the Los Angeles Dodgers in late May, the club will also wear the '86 team's uniform multiple times throughout the season as an alternate uniform kit, according to ESPN.com.

The Mets' '86 uniform isn't too far off from its current home jersey, as both kits feature pinstripes; however, the '86 kit has a blue stripe bookended by two orange stripes running down the side of the uniform shirt and pants.

New York's formal honoring of the 30th anniversary of the '86 World Series team will take place May 28 at 6:30 p.m. ET, prior to the Mets' game against the Dodgers at Citi Field.

All the players and coaches from the '86 title team have been invited to participate in the pre-game ceremony.

The Memorial Day weekend celebration of the '86 team will begin on Friday, May 27 with a replica jersey giveaway, and will end on May 29 with a replica championship ring giveaway.

If the Mets can build on what they achieved last season, that might only be the beginning of their championship celebration in 2016.
