Might Padres reliever Brandon Maurer be an All-Star?

Published Jun. 24, 2015 6:38 p.m. ET

The conventional choices for Padres All-Stars this year are outfielder Justin Upton and catcher Derek Norris. Both have been among the leading vote-getters at their positions this season, and both have been putting up All-Star caliber numbers.

However, MLB.com points out that there might another Padres player just as deserving -- right-handed relief pitcher Brandon Maurer. In 33 relief appearance, the right-hander is 5-0 with a 1.50 ERA. He’s been so good lately that he hasn’t given up a run in 11 straight appearance this month.

Since he’s not a starter or a closer, Maurer might get overlooked. However, since the game does count for home-field advantage in the World Series, it might be a smart move to have Maurer on the squad.
