Mike Trout wins 2016 AL MVP Award
Angels centerfielder Mike Trout was named the 2016 American League MVP on Thursday.
Trout, 25, hit .315 with 29 home runs, 100 RBIs and 30 stolen bases. He finished with a sky-high .441 on-base percentage and a 10.6 WAR, putting him a full win ahead of runner-up Betts. The Angels finished fourth in the AL West with 74 wins, which didn’t hurt his individual case in the end. The last MVP from a team that missed the playoffs was Alex Rodriguez with the Rangers in 2003. Trout also won the MVP in 2014.
Betts, 23, finished second, with a .318 average, 31 home runs, 26 stolen bases, 113 RBIs and an .897 OPS. Astros second baseman Jose Altuve finished third.
Cubs third baseman Kris Bryant is considered the strong favorite to win the award in the National League. Nationals second baseman Daniel Murphy and Dodgers shortsop Corey Seager are also up for the honors.
