Minor leaguer benched after HR trot

I'll confess that if I'd been in the stands for this, Miguel Sano's home run trot Tuesday would not have struck me as being unreasonably self-congratulatory. But there are people who track these things, and the folks at Wezen-ball.com assert that Sano's 29-second jog for Double-A New Britain would have been among the 10 slowest home run trots of the MLB season, had it occurred in the majors.

Sano — his third year in the Twins organization — was benched for the remainder of what was at the time a one-run game against the Portland Sea Dogs, and then suspended. The farm director for the Twins, Brad Steil, asserted that it was time for Sano to sit quietly and think about ... something.

“Just a normal player-development decision,” Steil told TwinCities.com. “We have discipline for all sorts of things that we do. This is one of them. He’s not going to play for a few games.”

The team described it in that old catch-all sports parlance, "violation of team rules."

Sano is the No. 3-rated prospect in the minor leagues. He has 26 home runs this season in Double-A.
