Orioles' Adam Jones gives pointers to Red Sox' Mookie Betts on defense
Baltimore Orioles center fielder Adam Jones is one of the best defenders in baseball, so it makes sense for young players to learn from him right?
What if it's a member of a different team? In the same division?
According to Jones, it's not a big deal. Before a Orioles-Red Sox game last week, Jones was seen giving some pointers to Boston Red Sox outfielder Mookie Betts.
When asked if he felt awkward or guilty of sharing information with a division rival, Jones brushed it off. “No, not for me,” Jones told the Boston Herald. “Just spreading the knowledge of the game. A lot of older guys told me different things from different teams. It is about winning and losing, but also trying to help players get better.”
According to the Herald, Jones was giving tips to Betts on fielding balls off the wall.
All in all, Jones saw it as an opportunity to mentor a youngster and help him take the next step in his career.
“I was going out there (on the field), saw him working and thought, ‘All right, this is a good opportunity to go help him out with just some small little things,’ ” said Jones. “Hopefully, he doesn’t use it against us.”
Of course, Betts was asked about the encounter and said, “He wanted to give me some pointers. He’s one of the best. Nothing wrong with that.”
