Padres' pitcher Andrew Cashner sets two records
Andrew Cashner has been good at home. He set two records in his start on Wednesday against the Astros. First he set a Padres record by starting off the game with six consecutive strikeouts. The previous franchise record had been four. Among the Astros he struck out were Jose Altuve, George Springer and Colby Rasmus.
He finished the game with 10 strikeouts in seven innings and only two earned runs allowed. Cashner has now allowed two earned runs or fewer in 21 consecutive home starts -- a major league record. The Dodgers’ Orel Hershiser had a 20-game streak, and Jose Fernandez currently has an active 20-game streak with the Marlins.
Cashner struck out five of the first six Astros on his slider. After the game he told reporters, “My slider is finally back to where it was when I came over here in 2012.”
