Phillies Won National League East Nine Years Ago Today

It’s hard to believe, but nine years ago today the Phillies greatest era officially began

The 2007 season was magical for the Philadelphia Phillies. While they were swept by the eventual National League Champion Colorado Rockies, no one other than Jimmy Rollins thought we’d be the team to beat.

Nine years ago today, the Phillies proved they were in-fact the team to beat. Nine years ago, Brett Myers stepped to the mound as the Phillies closer, and threw a 12-6 curveball to Chris Coste to strike out Willy Mo Pena and seal the National League East.

Nine years ago, the words of Harry Kalas still ring through our ears, and we can perfectly recite his call.

The names that were seen in the celebratory mosh pit are just incredible throwbacks. Obviously you see Jimmy, Chase, Shane, Ryan, and Chooch in there, but I find the bench players and bullpen arms to be incredible bust-out names.

Who could forget starting third basemen Wes Helms and Abraham Nunez? Tadahito Iguchi, Chris Roberson, Rod Barajas, Russell Branyan, and Pete LaForest coming off the bench.

Can’t forget outfielders Aaron Roward and Michael Bourn.

The pitchers were just incredible names as well. Besides Jamie Moyer, Cole Hamels, Myers, and Kyle Kendricks, the starters were some way outta there names. Adam Eaton, Kyle Loshe, J.D. Durbin, and Jon Lieber all showed up.

In the bullpen you had Antonio Alfonseca (who had 12 fingers and toes), Clay Condrey, Jose Mesa, Mike Zagurski, Yoel Hernandez, Geoff Geary, Tom Gordon, J.C. Romero, and Ryan Madson. How we ever won a game with that staff I have no idea.

But as that era in Phillies baseball will officially come to an end this weekend, it’s a great time to both turn the page and look back at the great times.
