Rangers' Andrus talks about his 'really good' metabolism and using Hamilton's bat
On Tuesday, Texas Rangers shortstop Elvis Andrus appeared on KRLD 105.3 the Fan's 'Ben and Skin Show' for an on-air interview.
Among the topics he covered during the chat were his recent use of teammate Josh Hamilton's heavier bat and his penchant for eating a lot of food.
Apparently, he decided to use Hamilton's lumber after a chat with the slugger during batting practice that also inspired him to hit with more of a leg kick. As the Dallas Morning News quoted, "That was around two weeks ago. It was during BP and we’re in the same group. He’s been talking to me like years ago, he’s like, ‘You’re a six-foot guy, why don’t you let it go? Why don’t you just let your swing develop and just swing hard and see what happens?’ Since that day I started getting bigger hacking and hacking instead of trying to hit the ball the other way or trying to guide the ball.”
The hosts then playfully asked Andrus if he ever saw himself becoming, in their words, 'Fat Elvis' at some point in his life. His answer expressed an appreciation for a 'really good' metabolic system, but of course that's something that can change over the years: “I hope not. … I don’t know. I’ve got a really good metabolism but you never know. When you’re retired, all the beers and the alcohol and doing nothing, but I really like to work out, so I don’t think I will let that happen to myself. Maybe a little boiler because I think it comes with age, but nothing like being fat.”
