Rangers interested in Padres All-Star pitcher Drew Pomeranz

The Texas Rangers are interested in acquiring San Diego Padres All-Star pitcher Drew Pomeranz, FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports.

Pomeranz is 8-7 with a 2.47 ERA and 1.06 WHIP in 17 starts this season. The left-hander has racked up 115 strikeouts in 102 innings, allowing just 67 hits in the same stretch.

Pomeranz, who was acquired by San Diego in an offseason trade with Oakland, won the fifth starting spot out of spring training and is quietly having a career year with the Padres. The first-time All-Star is not even arbitration eligible until this coming offseason, which makes him an appealing trade target for many teams. If the struggling Padres are prepared to make Pomeranz available, the Rangers will likely have some stiff competition for his services.

Texas entered the All-Star break with the best record in the American League (54-36) and a 5 1/2-game lead in the AL West. However, its starting staff has been plagued by injuries, so acquiring Pomeranz would certainly help fill a huge void in the back end of the Rangers' rotation.

Yu Darvish (shoulder) is on track to return as early as next week, but Derek Holland (shoulder) and Colby Lewis (lat) aren't expected to return until at least early August.
