One big question mark surrounding the trade deadline is the Boston Red Sox.
After entering the season with high hopes, the Sox have stumbled and sit seven games back heading into Wednesday's games.
According to a report from WEEI, the Red Sox are looking at younger, controllable starters:
According to a major league source, the Red Sox priority leading up to the July 31 deadline is to find younger pitchers who are under team control beyond just this season. Also per the source, it isn’t likely the Red Sox would be chasing pitchers already owed a substantial chunk of money.
As WEEI points out, Cole Hamels falls into the category of pitchers owed a substantial chunk of money, so you can likely count the Sox out of that race.
Controllable starting pitching isn't cheap, but time will tell if the Sox are willing to label themselves as "sellers" and move major league players.
