Report: Mets, Padres at impasse over asking price for Justin Upton

Published Jul. 27, 2015 4:04 a.m. ET

The New York Mets are searching for a big bat to add to their lineup, but only at the right price.

The most frequently mentioned power-hitter in connection with the Mets is Padres outfielder Justin Upton, who would provide New York, which is 29th in MLB in runs scored this season (349), with some much-needed pop in its batting order.

However, CBS Sports reports that the Mets aren't onboard with the Padres' asking price for Upton, which is said to include at least one premier prospect, and San Diego has reportedly not expressed any desire to cover a portion of the $14.5 million Upton is owed this season.

In 93 games in his first season with the Padres this year, Upton has hit .251/.330/.429 with 16 home runs, 50 RBI, and 17 stolen bases in 18 attempts.

The report says it's unknown whether the two teams could resume talks about Upton before the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline.
