Report: Mets to start Harvey in Game 3 with no inning limits

Published Sep. 29, 2015 10:25 p.m. ET

Indications look like New York Mets ace Matt Harvey will pitch Game 3 of their first-round playoff series.

As the Mets plan out their postseason rotation, manager Terry Collins and GM Sandy Alderson revealed their probable strategy for Harvey.

In an effort to conserve Harvey by limiting him to one start in the Division Series and potentially gain an advantage with a pivotal mid-series win, Alderson and Collins are leaning towards scheduling him as their Game 3 starter.

"Game 3 is an important game," Alderson told ESPN. "It doesn't matter whether up 2-0 or down 0-2 or 1-1, it's a big game."

While the Mets haven't officially announced their postseason rotation, it appears reigning NL Rookie of the Year Jacob deGrom and Noah Syndergaard will start Games 1 and 2, respectively, and rookie lefty Steven Matz will take the hill for a potential Game 4.

While the Mets will be cautious about the frequency of Harvey's starts, they won't place any restrictions on him during his starts.

"When he goes out and pitches, the reins will be off," Collins said. "We can't pitch him six times."
