Report: Mets' Zack Wheeler will have minor surgical procedure on elbow

Published Apr. 8, 2016 12:41 p.m. ET

New York Mets right-hander Zack Wheeler will have a minor surgical procedure to remove a stitch that failed to dissolve following his Tommy John surgery last year, ESPN reports.

Wheeler missed the entire 2015 season while recovering from the elbow ligament-replacement surgery and was projected to return this July, and this procedure apparently won't affect that timetable. He should be able to resume his throwing program in two weeks.

In 32 starts in 2014, Wheeler went 11-11 with a 3.54 ERA and 187 strikeouts in 32 starts (185 1/3 innings).

The Mets re-signed veteran right-hander Bartolo Colon this past offseason to serve as the fifth starter until Wheeler is ready to return.
