Report: MLB investigating Yu Darvish regarding brother's alleged gambling ring

Published Jan. 19, 2016 2:49 p.m. ET

Texas Rangers right-hander Yu Darvish is being investigated by Major League Baseball for his potential involvement in his brother's gambling ring, the Japan Times reported on Tuesday.

Darvish issued a statement through his agent later on Tuesday that he understands the MLB has to conduct an investigation.

"I am certain that they will find that I had no involvement in this matter whatsoever," Darvish said in the statement through his representatives at the Wasserman Media Group.

Last year, Darvish's brother Sho was charged with allegedly spearheading an illegal ring in Japan, and though Yu isn't being charged with anything — or accused of any involvement, even — the MLB has confirmed to the Times that it is "conducting a probe" into whether he is connected in any way.

"We are aware of this situation and are looking into it, per our standard protocols," MLB vice president of communications told the Japan Times.

Darvish missed the entire 2015 campaign after Tommy John surgery, but he is expected to return sometime in 2016.
