Report: Royals LF Alex Gordon is headed to the DL with a broken hand

The Kansas City Royals will place three-time All-Star left fielder Alex Gordon on the disabled list Monday with a broken bone in his right hand that will keep him out 3 to 4 weeks, according to the Kansas City Star.

Gordon left Sunday’s 3-2 loss to the Chicago White Sox after he collided with third baseman Mike Moustakas in foul territory. He hit his head on the tarp roll while falling to the ground, but it turned out to be the hand injury he suffered that was most serious. Moustakas is day-to day with a knee contusion and will miss Monday’s game against the Twins.

Gordon, 32, is off to a rocky start this season, batting a career-low .211 with four home runs and 10 RBI in 42 games. He has been an All-Star in each of the past three seasons and won a Gold Glove in every year from 2001-14. Last year, he hit .271 with 13 home runs and 48 RBI for a Royals team that won the World Series.

Despite Gordon’s struggles, the 22-21 Royals have won seven of their past 11 games to pull to within 3.5 games of the first-place Chicago White Sox in the AL Central.
