Rockies closer John Axford making All-Star case

The latest All-Star Game fan voting updates were released on Monday, and with less than a week remaining for voting, it doesn’t look like the Rockies will have any starters on the National League squad. Nolan Arenado has not budged at fourth among third baseman in votes despite putting up MVP-like numbers. While Arenado will surely be put on the roster as a reserve, there’s another Rockie who may get consideration as well: closer John Axford.

Axford may not be among the National League leaders in saves, but that’s no fault of his. He was a perfect 12-for-12 in save opportunities until last week, and had a minuscule ERA of 0.47 after picking up that twelfth save.

Axford deflected attention from himself when asked about the possibility of being an All-Star by MLB.com:

"To be rewarded one way or another and if one of those deals is to be in the All-Star Game, it's great. But we have a lot of guys in this room who can potentially be rewarded.”

The right-hander has never been an All-Star, though he led the NL in saves with the Brewers in 2011.
