Perhaps he would be comfortable if the difference in money wasn’t as great as it appeared – deferrals could lower the present-day value of say, a five-year, $100 million offer from the Nationals; an opt-out clause could enhance the value of say, a three-year, $70 million offer from the Mets.
Perhaps he also figures that if an opt-out from the Nationals would enable him to become a free agent after say, two years, he might as well just accept the shorter deal from the Mets.
