Speedster Dyson might have bigger role on Royals in 2016

To this point, Jarrod Dyson has basically served one crucial role for the Kansas City Royals: late-inning pinch-runner and occasional starter.

With the Royals on the verge of possibly having two outfield vacancies, though, it looks as if Dyson might be thrust into a bigger role in 2016.

GM Dayton Moore said as much this week, as quoted by Andy McCullough of the KC Star

McCullough added that the Royals have a few prospects in the pipeline that could be ready sooner rather than later, such as Bubba Starling and Brett Eibner. Within that context, allowing Alex Gordon to leave via free agency and not filling the gap with an expensive free agent signing would make room for the prospects to make their arrival, whenever that may be.

“We think it’s time for Dyson to get an opportunity to play a lot more,” Moore said inside his suite at the Gaylord Opryland Resort and Convention Center here at the Winter Meetings.

Why is Moore so eager to say Dyson would presumably be in line for 'everyday' status? Well, his rationale is quite simple:

By the sound of Moore's quotes, it seems as if Dyson is definitely in consideration as a contingency plan if Gordon leaves and/or the club doesn't find a suitable and affordable replacement.

“I think he’s capable of stealing 50-plus bases a year and scoring a bunch of runs,” Moore said. “When he’s on base, we score runs.”
